John Wick 3 cashes in $5.9M Thursday bounty, on track for $55M+ debut.

The hype around John Wick 3 is the real deal so far, as the Keanu Reeves threequel grossed more than 2.5 times the preview gross of Chapter 2’s $2.2M ($30.4M opening) with $5.9M in ~3,000 theaters, starting what is looking to be a rocking weekend. Other comparisons include 2015’s Spectre ($5.25M previews/$70.4M opening), 2016’s Jason Bourne ($4.2M/$59.2M), The Equalizer 2 ($3.1M/$36.0M), and Mission: Impossible - Fallout ($6.0M/$61.2M). Word of mouth so far appears excellent, so should Wick 3 not exhibit much frontloading, an opening day in the vicinity of $21M-$23M should happen.

Universal reported A Dog’s Journey Thursday previews brought in only $275K, well down from the $535K brought in by fellow dog flick A Dog’s Way Home. The weekend is likely to fall short of $10M. No numbers have been reported for The Sun Is Also a Star.

Avengers: Endgame showed a bit of stabilizing yesterday, dropping a little over 10% to an estimated $3.4M. Not facing a juggernaut to the degree of Deadpool 2, Endgame held better than Infinity War and will hope that translates over to the weekend. Detective Pikachu dropped 11% to $2.7M and faces a “day of reckoning” with its increase today on whether the videogame adaptation can
